SPEAKER_05

I'm excited. Okay. All right. Hello. And welcome to the Royal Highness podcast, where sometimes, well, actually we prefer to watch George Rebel Rebel Martin Chuos for the first time while we're enhanced with cannabis products. And then we talk about it while we're still enhanced with cannabis products. Um, and we did do the entirety uh so far of all of the George Rebel Rebel Martin shows, um, including Knight of Seven Kingdoms. If you haven't listened to that, go back and listen to those because those were. It was gone. It was very good. It was a lot of fun. And now we're back to The Last Kingdom on Netflix. Uh, so we can talk about that instead of how the world is burning. Hi, Spencer. Hi, Aileen. How are you doing? Hey, you know. Okay, so The Last Kingdom season four, episode six, titled Episode six.

unknown

Correct.

SPEAKER_05

Netflix says Erd, who I call bro through most of this because I can never remember his name.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, that's great. It used to be Ass Licker, but bro is so much more succinct.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, because he's the brother of Edith, who I like.

SPEAKER_09

So Yeah, she's alright.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Okay. Erdvoof and we call her Edith. Oh my god, ate it. I realized the other day my husband and I have uh Archie and Edith's chairs. Okay. Netflix says, Erdvilf and his men pursue Utrud's party as it flees through a countryside ravaged by disease. Undisclosed disease.

SPEAKER_09

Unspecified non-plague disease.

SPEAKER_05

Correct. Tensions rise between Edward and the Mercians. Who uh was the band that played at uh my prom in 1984?

SPEAKER_09

Edward and the Mercians? Yes, Edward and the Mercians.

SPEAKER_05

They were a they were a ska band.

SPEAKER_09

Surely that's just Herman Termitz, isn't that? I mean Edward and the Mercians?

SPEAKER_10

Did they not do the song Ferry Across the Mersey?

SPEAKER_05

Uh no, they did do the one, ooh, that's a lot of bodies in the water.

SPEAKER_09

It's dead body soup.

SPEAKER_07

It's a surf tune.

SPEAKER_02

T M T M T M.

SPEAKER_05

This is not a visual medium. Okay. We are again promised violence, nudity, language, and core, which is a different order than it usually is. Because when I went back to my original notes, it was gore, language, nudity, and violence, which leads me to believe that are they now putting it like ingredients? So the the higher it is on the list, the more there is of it.

SPEAKER_09

Well, that's clearly bullshit because there was no nudity whatever.

SPEAKER_05

There was no violence really either.

SPEAKER_09

Uh not really. I mean, there was a mercy kill.

SPEAKER_05

There well, there was some gore. Okay, there was the guys on okay, anyway. Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Um I was like, oh, I'll have to go back and also mention that the Last Kingdom wiki says they always do appearances at the end of each page for the episode. It says first, and it shows a bunch of people, and then it says deaths. Hundreds due to sickness that's sweeping the land. Like, okay, well, names, please. People are doing you're not put you're not pulling your weight.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Okay, so because we've had a big gap in between episode five and episode six, uh, we'll do a little overall recap here in case everybody's following us, you know, as we're releasing. So it's just so you remember, he is Utred, son of Utrid, father of Utrid.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And probably a lot more kids. We haven't really kept up with all of them because time jumps in big old slabs in these stories. Uh Wiggy's got baby monks on, and and and the other what's what's her name again?

SPEAKER_09

Who who?

SPEAKER_05

His daughter.

SPEAKER_09

Stiora.

SPEAKER_05

The one who's fed up with having to watch the sick.

SPEAKER_09

Yes, that's Stiora. She was spending time uh watching over Ethelstan and Aylfwin, who are Edward's children.

SPEAKER_05

Right. Yes.

SPEAKER_09

One of them is Edward's children, his first his bastard child, and then the other one is Lady Aylthelfland's daughter.

SPEAKER_10

Right, with with the uh Eric the Viking, right?

SPEAKER_09

Um, well, yes, but ostensibly he was also with Ethelred, uh or Ethelred's ch child, but we all think it was Eric's Okay, because he's a redhead. Uh well, yeah, and uh we are okay, so his party is Utrid, Utrid, Osforth Finnin, Citric, the two children, Stiora who's a little bit older, and later on, Eat it.

SPEAKER_05

Eat it. Okay, that's who's all on the road to Chesta.

SPEAKER_09

It's a big final Phartacy panty. Right. As you put it.

SPEAKER_05

But we have to okay, we're still catching up with Utrid. So okay, he was born a Saxon, heir to Bed Bath Beyond. He was kidnapped by Danes who raised him as a Dane.

SPEAKER_10

I could um I could I think we could skip like that. Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_09

So forward to where we were in season four.

SPEAKER_05

Okay, so Utred keeps getting himself in and out of all kinds of shenanigans, and right now Ethelred is dead. C Nut is dead.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Breeda wanted to be dead, but Oot couldn't do it. Yeah. Uh Fled has Oot take her daughter away so she does get married off to uh Destiny's All. Okay, I've kind of missed a good theme song. To be fair, I still do.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

You know, as much as we kinda made a lot of a noise about the musical choices in game of Game of Seven Dragons or whatever the fuck.

SPEAKER_10

Whoa! A knight of the seven uh throne dragons. A knight of the a knight of the house of thrones.

SPEAKER_05

Ooh, game of game of dragon night. Alright, so we cut to the back of the little house on the prairie wagon. The little girl who's gonna get married to Bro is crying, and Oot's kids are done with it.

SPEAKER_09

And so she's grumpy on the wagon, and Stora is like, hey, quit being grumpy.

SPEAKER_05

And then then there's a rider that comes up behind him and it's Aid It. It ate it. And she's like, Oh Flood wants you to meet her at the priory of St. What's his bucket? St.

SPEAKER_10

St. Milberg's, yeah. St. Milbert? Milberg.

SPEAKER_05

Milberg, sure.

SPEAKER_10

Okay.

SPEAKER_09

I don't know what that means. And I couldn't.

SPEAKER_05

Who's got his bones? Huh? Hmm? He's so fancy. He's got his own priory. This is who's got his bones, huh?

SPEAKER_09

His priory was literally a ring of marble stone in the ground. That's true. It was not very impressive.

SPEAKER_05

There was a big cross. There was a there was a building.

SPEAKER_09

Was there a building?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I think so.

SPEAKER_09

Maybe I was looking at something else.

SPEAKER_05

Because it said, Oh, you'll be able to see the cross soon. Was there just a big cross by the circle of stones? Oh. Mike's nodding. Okay.

SPEAKER_09

Well, it was jacked. Anyway, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, it was unimpressive. It's like one of those tourist traps where you drive an extra three miles and you go, God dang, it's just a ring of stones. Jesus Christ.

SPEAKER_10

Oh man, they built the floors crooked. It's not a gravity spot. You people are fucking dumb. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. So he's like, why should I believe you? And aren't you, wasn't it you and your brother who tried to like take over everything? And she's like, Yeah, but uh, he's a jerk, so I don't like him anymore. And he's like, Okay, well, you can't just go off all by yourself. She's like, sure, I can. I can go. I'm fine. I'm fine. He's like, Well, you can come with us. She's like, No, no, no, I'm good.

SPEAKER_09

Uh I got family in France.

SPEAKER_04

Uh-huh. Uh-huh.

unknown

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_05

Well, are you good with kids?

SPEAKER_09

No.

SPEAKER_05

Neither are we. Come with us.

SPEAKER_09

So, so she does. And that's utter bullshit because she ends up being very good with the children. At least as far as we see throughout the episode. Except for that one point, she's like, hey, hey, Wynn is sick. Well, what do you want me to do? What should I do? Tell her to calm down. That's good. I'm gonna do that when my kids get sick.

SPEAKER_05

Calm down. Kids love it when you tell them to calm down, especially teenagers. Uh, you should definitely try that.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Also, I think for the remainder of our series, I am going to use Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice to represent Utrid. Because I cannot copy his accent. He doesn't Utred, son of Utrid. That's fun.

SPEAKER_05

He convinces everybody to go back to Wenloca. He's like, we all gotta go. They're like, what there's just people cut to Edward having a fit at Red's funeral.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Well, a very calm fit. He's he's trying very hard not to let everyone know that the shit's gone completely tits up. And he wants to make sure that everyone around him keeps that face going. Especially bro. Right.

SPEAKER_05

In the background of the scene.

SPEAKER_09

Did I miss something?

SPEAKER_05

People are filing past Ethelred. Like, you know, at the end of a soccer game when you have to like, you know, do the hit. You just do it really fast and you just not really paying attention. You just go. They're just like walking around.

SPEAKER_09

Good game, bro. Good game, bro. Good game, bro. Good game, bro.

SPEAKER_05

Walking fast, like us leaving church right after communion.

SPEAKER_09

You don't come back to the pews. That's for suckers. Okay.

SPEAKER_05

What's going on?

SPEAKER_09

Well, the eldermen are like the eldermen are going, hey, this king kind of sucks at being king. Yeah. And currently, since there's a power vacuum, one of us has to be Mr. in charge guy. And if you remember, the the deal was that on his deathbed, Ethelred betrothed Elfwin to Erdwolf. Right. But that was made a yuppie, and no one agrees. Specifically, well, Ethelred himself didn't agree, and that's why bro killed him.

SPEAKER_10

And remember he just mushed his head? He mushed his head. Well, his head was already mushed. He just ignore it like I think he just squeezed his head. He had a balor. He had a balor wound.

unknown

A what?

SPEAKER_09

He had Baylor Targaryen's head wound, but it was on the top. So he just went on his brain with the pss. Yeah. And I took his ring, which becomes a plot point later. Fuckers. Why would he do that? Because people who commit crimes carry the evidence of their misdeeds with them.

SPEAKER_05

Do you think he was gonna say that he gave him the ring and told him to marry Athel? What's her name?

SPEAKER_09

I don't know what would possess him to do that because it's clear that Ethelred would never do that. We know his character well enough to realize he's not that way. And why would he suddenly on his deathbed go, You're such a pal, bro? Here's my ring-dig ding. Also, get hitched with my kid. It'll be swell. None of that happened. None of that happened.

SPEAKER_05

Beethelred he could claim it did because he didn't think anybody saw.

SPEAKER_09

Well, I don't know. But Edith was standing by the by the by the lattice work there, you see.

SPEAKER_05

She was like lattice work that separated your dining room from your living room. Just a little panel of it, though.

SPEAKER_09

And you'd have some uh some for some reason on the this on the Enterprise so that a little bit of light could shine through on Kirk's eyes.

SPEAKER_05

Uh, you know, just like that.

SPEAKER_09

Yes.

SPEAKER_05

It's those were magical moments, really, cinematically. Spock. Anyway, then they find out that Fled has fled. And that Edith helped their escape.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. The man who guards you uh has sent for for me to rescue you. Oh yeah. The man who guards, I guess that's Utrid. No one really said it could be. Was it Eldhelm? Or was it was it him? Who did it? Who Aldhelm got her free.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, it was Bullcutt.

SPEAKER_09

Bullcut. Bullcut, yes. Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_05

Edith and him helped her get free. So then uh they don't they they they basically decide they're better off not making a fuss and just getting the fugitives back before anybody notices they're gone.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Just uh hey everybody, really sneaky like go on and get well Edward sends someone called Senrich to track Utred down, not uh Bro. Because Bro is supposedly in charge of like the King's Guard, basically. And they don't want to stir up shit by having him go after uh anyone. Right.

SPEAKER_05

Because if he goes, if he leaves, it's gonna make people are gonna notice. But he doesn't cut to the road to Chester, yeah. And they're arguing over who gets the good bread, and then they come across three very stabibid this is the gore.

SPEAKER_09

Well, this is this yeah. Well, they're talking about the bread, and then some people just run and steal the bread out of the children's hands. And then we see the spiky people and one is still squirming.

SPEAKER_05

That guy was runny, he was still Are we to believe? Okay, so these people who were impaled, that's the only way to put it, yeah, impaled on spikes in the middle of the road, had the sickness, and so they were put there as a warning to people coming down the road not to go this way. But fuck, put some dead guys on there. Don't put a live guy on there.

SPEAKER_09

I wonder if they didn't realize he wasn't all the way dead.

SPEAKER_05

That they didn't know he wasn't all the way dead?

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, they was like, oh, he's pretty well, maybe still runny, but maybe that's just a he s he died recently, so we'll put him on there. But they didn't realize he was still alive, and also, Mike, that he was mostly dead. Mostly dead. Well, that's not what I was uh you can't see. I was giving you a cue to play that sound clip.

SPEAKER_02

Get up, you're mucking down with the sickness! Get up, you're mucking down with the sickness.

SPEAKER_09

That's what was wrong with them.

SPEAKER_05

He was down with the sickness. They were all down.

SPEAKER_09

And what's funny is that he didn't make a noise as they approached him. It was He did go. He kind of did.

SPEAKER_05

It's very close.

SPEAKER_09

And then uh Citric puts him out of his misery. And there's people also who with the bread stealers are like, don't go this way, there's sickness in the air. And uh young Richard's like, Don't worry, it only takes sinners. And I'm like, reminded 2020.

SPEAKER_05

But there's no way to prove or disprove that. So I'm gonna choose to believe it.

SPEAKER_09

Finn's like, we gotta go back.

SPEAKER_05

Finn says we have to kill the horses. We have to like burn everything. He's freaking out because he's seeing people die of this thing. So Ud convinces them that they're gonna go to this place to meet up with uh fled, but they're gonna have to go on foot.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, because the horses, I guess, are susceptible to this.

SPEAKER_05

I don't know. I think it's just because they can move more stealthiest television without the horses.

SPEAKER_09

This is a period of time where people thought that miasma spread disease.

SPEAKER_05

True.

SPEAKER_09

So they're worried the air itself is bad, and is going to affect their humors. Yeah. And so they hot okay, this is where I have the first major question of our program today. How does one hide safely in the middle of nowhere England six horses? Where do you just put horses in a cart where it's like no one will see these? I'm so glad you asked. Do you have an answer?

SPEAKER_05

Do they just build like Of course I do? How do you hide horses in the middle of England? Well, see what you do is you uh put a bunch of sticks on them and branches, and as they move about, the people just think, I don't remember that bush being there.

SPEAKER_09

So you're saying you camouflage all six horses as a shrub? As shrubs, correct. And then they just move about going and doing horsey things, occasionally.

SPEAKER_05

But they just look like a bush.

SPEAKER_09

How often have you seen a shrub bend over and drink from a stream? That thing that horses do where they just kind of go shake wickering where they shake their whole head and neck. Do shrubs do that?

SPEAKER_08

Uh the shaking shrubs do. What are the odds that someone's gonna be looking at them when they do that? Let's let's talk to Tim the shrubber. Our times where a shrubber cannot get business. No, I just said put them up in the trees because you can't see the horses in the trees. Well, who would expect that? I mean, they just have you ever seen a horse in a tree? That's how good they are at hiding.

SPEAKER_09

Well, I've also never seen a purple cow. I never hoped to be one, but I can tell you this right now, I'd rather see them be one.

SPEAKER_05

Maybe they did that thing. Maybe they like when you want to keep your food away from bears when you go camping, how you just hoist them up into a tree.

SPEAKER_10

So they just hung them there by the midsection.

SPEAKER_05

They use blankets, right?

SPEAKER_10

Under the bellies, hoisting them up next to a bale of hay. Or maybe there's like nearby hide a horse.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, hide a horse. You know, you you never there's never one of those around when you need one.

SPEAKER_09

It's it's like it's uh you know, like a storage unit. Like you have three or four storage buildings on the side of a highway, and there's just 40 stalls in a building, and you just go and you're like, it's 30 bucks, hold these horses, and they're like, here's the key for unit six. Just park your horses. Actually, we're gonna need two because we have a wagon as well. That goes to seven.

SPEAKER_05

That's true. The conostoga, apparently.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, it's kind of a mini one. Fresh off the Oregon Trail. Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Um, Fled is arriving at the Ring of Stones with the cross at it. Yes. And she's with Bull Cut, and she's like, he's not here. I don't know what to do. And he's like, dude'll be here. You know, Oot. He'll be here with the kids.

SPEAKER_09

Dude's never failed you.

SPEAKER_05

And then she's like, you know, um, I can't save you if they accuse you of trees. So just so you know.

SPEAKER_10

So just be aware of the fact that your death warrant has been signed. Pretty much.

SPEAKER_05

Just by helping me. It should have been signed when you got that bowl cut. But although I kind of look like I have a bowl cut right now. No, you don't.

SPEAKER_09

I'm bald. I don't have a business talking about hair. Back in Mercia. Erdwolf uh is like all up in this guy, it's Burgred. He's up in his grill. Am I wrong here?

SPEAKER_05

So Berg. He's like, my kid's gonna be king.

SPEAKER_06

It's like no, my kid's gonna be king. So fucking stupid.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, this is a bunch of dick measuring.

SPEAKER_05

Was the kid later on when he confronts uh bro, right? His kid, he he like sidles up to bro. We'll get we'll get there. Okay, hang on. Because the kid again, I don't want to get married. Had that big energy.

SPEAKER_10

You're married, Princess Lookie. And you never get used to the idea.

SPEAKER_05

So then a bunch of folks are coming into the Renfair.

SPEAKER_09

They're all bad.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Lord, there's a sickness spreading through Mercia. Right. Can you describe it? Bad.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, it's a lot of people. And they're they're arguing over whether to close the gates or not. I'm sitting there going, close the gates, close the gates, close the gates. Because I'm a selfish bitch.

SPEAKER_09

I understand what Perleg was saying. Like, we cannot close, you cannot refuse help to the sick. That's not fair. Burgard agrees with that. But Dr. Mr. House is there and he's like, Oh, well, I agree with Mr. Bold Boogerbutt over here. I can't remember his name.

SPEAKER_10

I'm dying because you said bruh brub. That is his name, actually, what you just did there.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. And um, so Edward shuts the gates. And Charlie's just gone, what the fuck?

SPEAKER_05

What the fuck? Did you notice there was a last-minute baby that got through?

SPEAKER_09

Did the baby squeak? I didn't I didn't notice. I was too busy watching, like, as the doors were closing, are they gonna show an arm get trapped?

SPEAKER_05

So I was pretty sure it was one of those things where like the mom threw the baby over the guard's arm.

SPEAKER_04

And then caught it, then ducked under the arm and caught the baby on the other side.

SPEAKER_09

She did the Statue of Liberty with her baby?

SPEAKER_04

I think so.

SPEAKER_09

That's pretty great.

SPEAKER_04

They should work that in.

SPEAKER_09

That is some top-tier, you know, fourth down and goal-to-go bullshit from uh from random Mercian woman. That's good stuff.

SPEAKER_05

And she goes and tosses the baby over the arm. She goes, What is the arm? Catches the baby on the other side. It's good! Watch down, Mercia. Oh, we're back in Winchester and Lady Ellsworth.

SPEAKER_09

We should also mention that Bro has taken 12 men and escaped to find everyone. Whoever he finds, I guess.

SPEAKER_05

So now there's two search parties out, right?

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Back in Winchester, Lady Ellsworth is gone.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. The queen, such as she is, is just stomping around. Who did this? Meanwhile, mom on a horse, placidly smiling as she rides slowly away from Winchester. Hey, look at me. I'm on a horse. Isn't that positive and droll? Ugh. I didn't miss her.

SPEAKER_05

In the meantime, the kids and Oot are walking through a creek bed, and that's pretty fucking smart because that's down below the road. Nobody's gonna be watching down there. True. Right? Yeah. That's a lot of forest, though. They kind of do that drone where they pull up out of where they are, and I'm like, man, that is some thick, deep forest. Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

There's a lot of area there.

SPEAKER_05

They're walking along and they hear a horse whinny. And they're like, oh shit.

SPEAKER_01

And this woman's like, the sickness is coming. You should go with the horse. Come along. Come along. Yes.

SPEAKER_05

Sorry. That's um Janita's. She wants to wait for Utrid and her kids. Oh, that's right. This is uh that's um successfully.

SPEAKER_09

They're waiting, right? And then this load of people who are all headed to the next Renfair come out, and their representative comes out and does what you just did.

SPEAKER_07

The sickness is about. Come with us if you want to live.

SPEAKER_05

This is what I talked about earlier. This pissed me off so much. Center yourself, Aline. Don't just go on a rager here.

SPEAKER_09

Look out.

SPEAKER_05

Ethelflaed and Bullcut are there for an afternoon and decide that he's not coming. And they're gonna go to Keist Chester, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So they get on horseback and they gallop down the road. And as they pass by this clump of bushes, outcomes.

SPEAKER_04

You're telling me they didn't hear those whole fucking horses fucking 50 feet away. Give me a goddamn break. And all they had to do was look right. If they looked, if any of them, any of them looked right, they would have seen them.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, I got it.

unknown

Hi.

SPEAKER_03

Utrud would have gone, oh god, there she goes right now.

SPEAKER_09

And they could have, wait, wait, hi, wow. And that never happened.

SPEAKER_05

That's so stupid. They couldn't make it like the kids come home, you know, later. No.

SPEAKER_09

Horses go by, they come out of the bushes. They could have had a title card that said literally 15 minutes later. Instead, it looked like moments look seconds. Look right. I they can't have a ton of traffic going that way.

SPEAKER_05

I'm gonna bet you Edward's little son, the little hijinx kid with the frogs and shit.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

He looked right.

SPEAKER_09

He probably went, dad go.

SPEAKER_10

Shut up, it's a scan. Nobody paid attention.

SPEAKER_07

I am no one. I am a creepy child. I will be king someday.

SPEAKER_09

Be quiet! You're not king now. We're going straight. I'm Utred, son of Utred, father of Utred.

SPEAKER_05

You know, she could have left a note. That's all I'm saying. Just leave a note. Went to Chester.

SPEAKER_09

Look what I found. Stapled too stapled. What's a staple, sir? So Herod Wolf says that when when the US people break off from his group because of the sickness, which people are down with. He says again, it only takes sinners. So he loses a few guys who clearly sinners.

SPEAKER_10

Oh fuck that goat the other day. I'm leaving.

SPEAKER_05

You know. We cut back to Oot and the kids, and they're walking through a field at dusk, I think it's supposed to be. And Finn and convinced that Elfwin is sick, right? And she does have a cough. I'm like, anyway, uh, they find a good tree hollow. I'm gonna say that's an excellent tree hollow. That would be delightful to sleep in. I'm guessing, however, having slept out of doors, there's some shit in there. Oh.

SPEAKER_09

And bugs. There's there's probably uh like animals living in that little hole.

SPEAKER_05

Because it's a nice little place to bed down. That's probably a nice little bear den.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

You know, Papa Bear wanders home.

SPEAKER_09

It would have been funny if they had gotten there and Finan was like, Lord, there's loads of bear shit everywhere. And you should just go, sweep it out, we're sleepy anyway.

SPEAKER_08

Uh, you know, I ain't afraid of bear shit.

SPEAKER_04

What?

SPEAKER_08

I'm not afraid of bear shit. Are there bears in England? Yes, yeah. In the wild? There's brown bears in England.

SPEAKER_06

Are there?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Bears are everywhere.

SPEAKER_05

They have those crazy bears. The um, not the sun bears, spectacled bears.

SPEAKER_09

They wear glasses?

SPEAKER_05

No, but they're well, they have little they're they almost look like a panda. These things are like berserkers or something. I'm trying to think. They have some crazy bears.

SPEAKER_08

I'll look it up while you're talking. Okay.

SPEAKER_09

What if I already did? So you did? Brown bears are not native to the wild in England, having gone extinct 1500 to 3,000 years ago.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_09

Having said that.

SPEAKER_05

Are there any bears?

SPEAKER_09

There are other wild bears in England. Their fossil record stops around the end of the medieval period. So there was bears while this was happening.

SPEAKER_05

You know why there's no more bears?

SPEAKER_09

They hunted them to extinction.

SPEAKER_05

Otrid. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

I killed all the bears.

SPEAKER_05

Uh, Edward's um idea uh to make sure that the sickness doesn't find them is to burn herbs in the fields.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Go smudge the entire country.

SPEAKER_05

Yep. Can we do that here? And this is where Edward finds out that uh this guy went to find Fled and the kids browted.

SPEAKER_09

And he's not happy. And then he tells Dr. Mr. House, maybe you should tell me better who to listen to, fuck nuts. Without calling him fuck nuts. There was some fuck nuts tone. He was physically fuck nuts.

SPEAKER_05

So there's a cut to uh uh see waking up and the guy this is Finn's famous line that Mike was saying, which was Ha to anybody, anybody uh shits water, you stay behind. Anyone who shits liquid will be left behind.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, and and our little sick girl is looking sicker, and she's hallucinating a good time chasing a crow. I mean, she's got that weird vignette around her vision.

SPEAKER_08

She went all Bran the Broken following the crow. She did. And who has a better story than Bran the Goddamn Broken? Well, Elf Win the Sickness, clearly.

SPEAKER_09

WAA Even even eat it, the the the the lady of ill repute has a better story than Bran. Because at least she fucking does something.

SPEAKER_05

Bran's story is as exciting as his namesake.

SPEAKER_09

And you don't mean Brandon Stark. You mean Bran.

SPEAKER_05

No, I mean Bran.

SPEAKER_09

The husk of wheat. The muffin component.

SPEAKER_05

Yes.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, that's what he is.

SPEAKER_05

He's a part of a paired with crazins. Two scoops. Alright. Uh I said, oh fuck, the little girl's dead, isn't she? Oh, she's not. She sees a crow, follows it. Oh, she sees uh airwolf shit. And then was she about to say something to him?

SPEAKER_09

I think she was about to say ah or something like that. Um I think she may have been about to shout or something, and then Uchud is like, no, be quiet with his hands. Don't do it. You wake him up, and then he'll roll at me. And uh that doesn't happen. And then they run.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, they just run.

SPEAKER_09

And as we've experienced running in armor.

SPEAKER_10

They run for what seems like eight days.

SPEAKER_05

It's it's untenable, and here's why.

SPEAKER_10

It's warm.

SPEAKER_05

You can't run through fields like that either. You can't run through the woods. No, because you could twist your angle in a snake hole. Between tufts and holes and brambles and prickers. Random stone. Not to mention the ticks. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_08

No, I will say, as I was watching this scene, and I thought to myself, Eileen's gonna harp on the fact that they can't run through the woods. But to me, that area seemed like it was very well groomed and very much like next to like a golf course or something.

SPEAKER_09

Just yeah, there were paths way too clean. That was a really nice nature preserve or you know, campsite that they were running to. Yes, there are ticks in England.

SPEAKER_05

Oh there's ticks everywhere.

SPEAKER_09

Probably on you right now. Now you creeped out.

SPEAKER_05

I'm sorry. Okay, if it survived our Snow Mageddon, good on them.

SPEAKER_09

That'd be really great. Afterwards, you see the ticks sitting there having a cigarette. You guys wouldn't believe what I've been through. Fucking two feet of snow, man. I ain't biting people anymore. I just want to get the fuck out of here.

SPEAKER_05

All right. Cut to Tent City outside the gates of Agarlsberg. And Golsberg. Garglesburg.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, that's it right there, Garglesburg. Yes.

SPEAKER_05

Lady Wifey has arrived and she's telling, tell the elder man I'm here. Tell the elderman, tell Edward I'm here. And uh then we cut, we're we're cutting back then to panicked music with with Utrid and the kids running.

SPEAKER_06

Fucking uh sound music styles running through over the hills and shit.

SPEAKER_08

I said it was more it sounded more like bad 1970s Doctor Who background music.

SPEAKER_09

Oh well, some of us don't record a Doctor Who podcast, Mike. This is true.

SPEAKER_08

Some of us haven't even been invited to be a guest or a 1970s Saturday morning cartoon background mo music.

SPEAKER_03

Jinky nobody.

SPEAKER_05

Okay, so now we uh scoob and this whole time Utrud is carrying the sick girl.

SPEAKER_09

He is like over the shoulder through the woods. She's sick.

SPEAKER_06

They're trying to avoid the sickness, and they just keep carrying her around, passing her from person to person, sleeping right up next to her. What the fuck is happening?

SPEAKER_09

I guess they're not swimmers, so you know, whatever.

SPEAKER_05

Edward and Lyrica are arguing over whether to let Lady Wifey in or not. And Edward decides he's letting her in, and when he does, like a bunch of other people rush the door like they've uh announced free pickles at the Ren Fair.

SPEAKER_09

Somebody, free pickles? Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Is that a thing to give away at the Ren Fair? They don't. You have to buy them, but they're delicious. And they're huge. And well, I'm not buying one then.

SPEAKER_09

I'll you know, I like a pickle. Listen, I like a pickle. But the bigger the pickle, the more intimidated I am, and the less I want it. It's just like, yeah, this is too big. I don't know how to deal with this. It's too much pickle. I can't handle this size. It's like a banana that's really long. I mean, it's like, I'm never gonna finish this. It's too big. And again, I know these things are phallic, and I know you're thinking that's what it is. No, I don't think it's not it at all. It's just in it's like buying a sub that's too long.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Again, it's phallic. I'll be big tray of lasagna.

SPEAKER_05

That's two meals.

SPEAKER_09

I'm not intimidated by lasagna. Who am I kidding? Big pickles creep me out.

SPEAKER_05

I do like a pickle at the Ren Fair, though.

SPEAKER_09

In the blue corner. Wearing your shorts, Mr. Big Pickle.

SPEAKER_05

Mom and Edward argue about why she's there. And mom's like, I want to see my daughter. And he's like, Well, you gotta luck, then, because she's a Lutrid. And mom's just like, What the fuck?

SPEAKER_09

Oh, so he talked her into going? Doesn't seem like that's the case. No. Yeah, and why did you have her imprisoned anyway? I didn't. Why'd you have me imprisoned? I didn't. Well, look what you did, buddy. And that's kind of the whole talk.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. She's just a ray of sunshine, isn't she? She's pleasant. At the light.

SPEAKER_04

Um.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. So we see Breda and another Danish woman loading logs on a wagon. They're slaves for the king now, right? The Welsh.

SPEAKER_09

For the King of Wales.

SPEAKER_05

Yes.

SPEAKER_09

Uh, and and this man on the horseback, his name is Rodri. And I don't know what his deal is. Is he a general of some sort? Who knows? Because the king is back at the you know King place. Yeah, and I couldn't pronounce the De Hilbarth. De De Hubarth? Whatever.

SPEAKER_05

King House.

SPEAKER_09

King House. Anyway. He uh tells her she smells like poopy and spits on her.

SPEAKER_05

He gives she gives no fucks, though. She's Brita. She's like, I'll get mine. I'm biding my time. Yeah. It's gonna be good when it finally comes.

SPEAKER_09

Brida doesn't have any lines in this episode except for one. She has one line. Yeah. She calls she calls Rodri a lying turd. And that's her only line.

SPEAKER_05

So Father P looks out and he sees some villagers outside the gates or something, and so he sneaks them in.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. I think we may have skipped a touch here.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, did I? Oh, wait, okay. Oh, first he sees the villagers. Then we see uh Finn and um Edward's kids. What's his name again? Ethel Stan. Stan. Flat Stanley. We see Ed uh Flat Stanley and Finnan float in a boat, and then Oots Kid's away. Ots kids talking about pagan and Christian things. That was weird.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. And and instead of chiding her, Utrid is kind of like, alright, that's cool. Which is kind of nor not normal for him, I noticed. He was okay with that.

SPEAKER_05

The the the baby monk? The uh Utrid?

SPEAKER_09

He was okay with her being pagan. He didn't give her the whole God thing. He was just like, yeah, alright, if that's what we're gonna do.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

I'll take whatever they give us as far as protection. And then there's a little chat. Uh Osfirth and Edith have a talk about Finn. Uh and how he's I think she's sweet on him. I think she's sweet on most of the men, but hasn't done things yet. Well, because they've been nice to her.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, she's been she tells she tells Ossporth, she's like, it's so nice to be amongst a group of men who don't just see me as something to be passed around and traded. They have a nice little homey area there by the water.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, this outdoor swimming pool waterfall feature, which is clearly just behind some hotel.

SPEAKER_05

They filmed it, they filmed it at the Polynesian. Yeah. Um let's see. So Wolf's dude has picked up the trail, and I'm like, oh no, will he find them when they're asleep? So they're all laying there, and Edith thanks Utred for not killing her brother.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, and he says, if I have a chance, I will. And she's like, Yeah, that's fair.

SPEAKER_05

That's fair. She asks about his gods. Do they sit in judgment? And he's like, No, I got better things to do, man.

SPEAKER_09

They don't give a shit about me. What about yours? And I was waiting for her to go, used to think so. Not so much anymore, but that didn't happen.

SPEAKER_05

No, but he says that he used to think that the path of the warrior was how he got to Valhalla, but now he's not so sure. I'm like, oh come on, stick to your guns here, babe.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. So then we we go back to Wales. And it is party time? Holy shit, what a meal. I've decided something uh I'd like to announce here. I don't like feast scenes because the food sounds are gross. There was food splurching. I am I don't like food splurching.

unknown

I don't

SPEAKER_09

Don't like it. Also, this guy's name is Howell, King Howell, if you recall.

SPEAKER_06

Thurston Howell?

SPEAKER_09

Yes, Rabbi. No. Howell H Y W E L Welsh style is Howell. How do you like that? And then they're all they're feasting, and there's a guy at the table, and Howell looks at Rodri and he says, That Brockfale of Gwent hasn't smiled once. And I'm just like, who the fuck is that? And do I care? I don't.

SPEAKER_05

We don't. None of us gives a shit about anything that's happening here.

SPEAKER_09

Well, other than the fact that Breed is there and Rodri's dragging around around the chain. And Howell is just like, dude, you're better than this. What the fuck? Calls him a turret.

SPEAKER_05

If decide to throw her in the pit.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, because she uh he shows her a blade that he claims belongs to C Nut, and then she's like, No, it isn't. You turd. And then she's like, throw her in the pit.

SPEAKER_06

It was a long way down.

SPEAKER_09

I was like, ooh, that's gonna hurt. And I realized it was probably only about six feet.

SPEAKER_05

I don't know. It still felt like a long way. She landed on her face.

SPEAKER_09

Well, that's she should have put her face above her feet. One would hope. Maybe the chain screwed that up. I don't know.

SPEAKER_05

This was a hell of a barbecue. Dude, they had a whole roast pig? A whole peg.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

They had mounds of things that looked like food, but I could not identify what they were if you asked me.

SPEAKER_09

Vittles? I'm gonna say vitals.

SPEAKER_10

Uh probably some sweet meats, which I've never been clear on. I guess sweet meats are like glands?

SPEAKER_08

Organs? Or is that sweet bread? Oh, sweetbreads. Sweet bread is the hypothalamus glands. Let's discuss. Sweet meat is the brains. Okay.

SPEAKER_09

So I'm just gonna have the yogurt. I will have the cornbread.

SPEAKER_10

Thank you. Okay. You lock me some pone!

SPEAKER_09

I love cornbread.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, I love cornbread.

SPEAKER_05

The famous Dave's cornbread mix. Oh, it's so good. Have you had famous Dave's cornbread at a famous Dave's?

SPEAKER_10

I have indeed.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, it's heavenly. They're so hard to find anymore. I don't think Dave is famous anymore.

SPEAKER_09

Well, we were just talking about a trip to one of our um our state's largest tourist traps, and there is a famous Dave's there.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, is there?

SPEAKER_09

Still, it was there six years ago, and we had we had seven years now. We had beans and cornbread and ribs and a big mug of beer, and it was fucking epic. And for the longest time, the the image of whenever my wife would call me that would show up in the little circle on my screen was a picture of her with a napkin tucked into her shirt and barbecue sauce all over both hands. Because I took a picture of her eating ribs at Famous Daves. I'm like, oh, this is adorable. Click. What the fuck are you doing? That's her profile now. So good. Sorry about the sidetrack there. I just thought that stuff to the barbecue.

SPEAKER_05

Um, Father P, this is where Father P is hiding the villagers in the barn feeding them.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And Lady Mama comes in and she wants to talk to him. Lady Mama. And he's like, I don't want to turn against Edward. She's like, I just want to know why Fled fled. That's it.

SPEAKER_09

Hey, nice.

SPEAKER_06

You're welcome.

SPEAKER_09

That was real good. Why did Fled fled?

SPEAKER_05

Why Fled fled?

SPEAKER_09

Then I like how he said, I don't want to do anything to interfere with or to betray the king.

SPEAKER_02

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_09

And then and and she's like, bitch, please. This is a bunch of sick people right there. Well, not sick people, but people he sneaked in.

SPEAKER_05

And he's like, except for this, I made a so mom then confronts Edward about why she put why he put Fled in prison.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Because that's why she fled. It's because he imprisoned her. She's poof. She's like, so you put your sister in jail. Now she's on the road. Now she's got my grandkids. Now they're gonna get sick. And it's gonna be your fault. Good thing Edith is with them. Good thing Edith is with them.

SPEAKER_09

They don't know who Edith is. Well, I mean, uh, I mean I made Edward might have noticed who she was because she's buddy buddy with Bro. But yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Well, she's his sister, yes.

SPEAKER_09

Yes.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

For now.

SPEAKER_05

What did who I don't I wrote this down, but I don't I don't remember who said it. Children dragged into politics rarely survive.

SPEAKER_09

Um that was Elsa said that. And I I don't know how she could possibly mean that because she has two grown children, one of whom is king. I mean, come on, they're alive. What the fuck? Well, they rarely survive. Okay, well I mean they were lucky, I guess. Yeah. We don't know about the eight kids that she had that died.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_09

Well, Alfred was still alive. I mean, I don't know. So the final part of C Panny, yeah, they're on their way to Chester.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_05

And Edith And Wolf and his boys are on the road.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

But Oot's staying to the ravines and away from the main road. And Edith is like, When is sick?

SPEAKER_09

What should I do?

SPEAKER_05

Tell him to calm down. Then they see Wolf. They hear the foot they hear the horses, they start running through the field.

SPEAKER_09

That's when they come across someone in the process says, We're not gonna run them.

SPEAKER_10

They're our horses.

SPEAKER_05

I think it was Finnan. That's good. Yeah. Then they come upon the bodies in the swamp.

SPEAKER_09

Oh god, this was disgusting.

SPEAKER_05

They should have just tossed Elwyn.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, Elfin's probably sick. We'll go in there. That's so gross. That was so gross. There's just thousands of bodies in the swamp. And I could just smell that. Alright. I can smell it.

SPEAKER_05

So they showed just a shot of like all the bodies in the swamp. Oh. And they're all still except for one guy who's floating. I don't think that actor made that choice. He's got his little hands in the water propelling him a little bit.

SPEAKER_09

Under his body, he's got one of those little tiny pocket fans and he turned it on. Little propeller in a move. Hey, hey, Jeff, stop moving. Jeff, what are you doing? They're not gonna see me. I'll be they're gonna have to do the shot over. We only have so many time. The drone's batteries run out. Stop fucking with your fan, Jeff.

SPEAKER_10

Just lay still, Jeff. I don't want to move. Everyone else is so still.

SPEAKER_05

Okay, so basically, um uh bro corners them. He and his guys have got them at arrow point, which I just saw TikTok about how that's not really a thing that they you could realistically do.

SPEAKER_09

But no, because if you get too close, I mean you have to take point blank shot as a perk in order to shoot somebody within five feet in DD. You can't do that normally.

SPEAKER_05

But in real life, you can't do that. If you're trying to hold that pull for that long, you can't do it.

SPEAKER_09

No, that's that's just what well, maybe longbows are different. Compound bows are made to do that, where you get to a certain point and it just goes, and then it's easy to hold. But a longbow made out of like you or whatever would not be easy to do. You're right.

SPEAKER_05

Anyway, okay, so while she's got a captive audience, as it were, Edith tells uh Wolf's guards about how he murdered Aethelred and stole his ring. And if you look in that little pouch on his around his neck, again, why would he take the ring? Um to find the ring. So then basically Wolf runs away and the men go back to Mercia because they don't want to get sick. And then we get back to uh Wales, where the end of the party, right?

SPEAKER_09

Oh, did you wait? Did you kind of kind of just skimmed right over the top of this pretty epic scene for Edith, where she gets his men to turn on him and he leaves for God knows where.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I said all that, but I guess I kind of glossed over.

SPEAKER_09

The the key part was that Erdwolf leaves. The Mercian guard is still loyal to a certain extent to Ethelred, and certainly to Mercia, where clearly Erdwolf is a bro who only wants to lick ass because that's what his name is. Ass licker.

SPEAKER_05

Bro.

SPEAKER_09

Bro. Well, Utrud gets Ethelred's ring off the ground. That's another thing. I'm sure that'll come back. Let's check off her ring. So, yes, back in Wales. The party's over. Someone needs to clean up this hall.

SPEAKER_05

Oh my god, can you imagine? The smell leftover pig.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

I like pork quite a bit. I too. Pig roast is a delicious affair.

SPEAKER_05

I have never been to one.

SPEAKER_03

Oh I was Are you okay? Who are you? So we don't know. Are you alright? Recalling the event has brought me down with the sickness. Oh wow. Oh no!

SPEAKER_05

Damn. So uh the Danes. Okay, so we see a dude. This is a fairly common trope in s in shows like this, where everybody's either preoccupied with something else, and somebody stumbles in, and they're just uh barely at death's door, right? They're somehow wound mortally wounded. So this guy is walking in. I'm like, who the fuck is this guy? What happened to him?

SPEAKER_09

Well, I can tell you what happened to him. His ears done got chomped. Yes. Oh god. One of them was just hanging there, like I couldn't stop looking at it. So he walks up to the king.

SPEAKER_05

Oh my god, is that your ear? Ew. Ew, you should have that looked at. For real. Can you hear that? That's gross. Why are you so gross? Ew. Well, turns out the Danes have arrived from Ireland.

SPEAKER_09

Sure enough.

SPEAKER_05

And they're coming to take your head.

SPEAKER_09

So he seemed almost happy to tell this story. I don't know if you see. It was like heh. The Danes. I'm guessing you might be a little shocky. Yeah. Probably a touch.

SPEAKER_05

A little bit of a little bit of both ears missing.

SPEAKER_09

You know, I feel like that some days. What with my new ears?

SPEAKER_05

Final scene. Final fantasy party is gonna go back to Edward. Yes. And Fled is gonna stay with Osworth and Edith and the kids, yes? Yes.

SPEAKER_09

Well in this village. Young Utrud and Citric are to find Nathal Fled and tell her that her daughter is safe. And Edith and Osford, Osworth will stay with her until Edward has sworn he won't harm Edith. Edith, yes. Yeah. But Edith Edith's concerned about Elfwyn. Utrud says, keep her alive. She is the future. Whatever that means.

SPEAKER_05

That's it. Did we miss anything, Mike? No, you you got it all. Yay. Woo! Thanks. Thank you so much for listening to our weird little podcast.
